World Mental Health Day 2018

World Mental Health Day takes place this year on Wednesday, October 10th, and Coventry and Warwickshire Mind is holding a number of activities throughout the week.

The annual event is a chance to raise awareness of issues around mental health and to get people talking to break down stigma.

The theme

This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day is young people and mental health in a changing world. Adolescence and the early years of adulthood are a time of life when many changes occur, and information from The World Health Organisation says half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, but most cases go undetected and untreated. In terms of the burden of the disease among adolescents, depression is the third leading cause.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. Harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs among adolescents is a major issue in many countries and can lead to risky behaviors such as unsafe sex or dangerous driving. Eating disorders are also of concern.

Get involved

This day, each October, thousands of supporters come to celebrate this annual awareness campaign to bring attention to mental illness and its major effects on peoples’ life worldwide.
