St Clair Gardens Honoured at Awards

Coventry and Warwickshire Mind’s new recovery centre in Coventry has been honoured at a national healthcare awards ceremony.

St Clair Gardens in Livingstone Road, Foleshill, has been awarded Highly Commended at the Building Better Healthcare Awards held in London last month (31 October 2018).

The gardens were intelligently designed and project managed by multi-disciplinary design practice IDP, based in Coventry. The multi-million pound residential recovery centre on the site of the former Livingstone Road baths has been built to give people experiencing mental health problems a helping hand to greater independence.

Representatives from IDP and Coventry and Warwickshire Mind joined 600 attendees for the awards ceremony which is held each year to celebrate innovation and improvement in the built environment, medical device design, and to highlight the efforts of people working in healthcare.

St Clair Gardens was awarded Highly Commended in the Best Interior Environment, New Build, category of the awards of which there were 26 categories this year.

Judges said of St Clair Gardens: “The interior of the building is very welcoming. We particularly liked the way the design subdivides the communal spaces to create a number of different environments.

“Reception and waiting areas can be very impersonal, but the subdivision within this scheme allows for both privacy and staff observation. It’s a very thoughtful project.”

Registered by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), St Clair Gardens incorporates 14 bedrooms over two floors, set around a central lounge with views over the garden and large windows which bathe the interior with light.

Kay St Clair, CEO of Coventry and Warwickshire Mind and after whom the centre is named in honour of her 25 years’ service for the charity, said: “We are delighted by the positive responses St Clair Gardens has received since opening in April and thank the judges of the Building Better Healthcare Awards for their high praise of our new centre.

“Our particular thanks go to IDP for the design. Our vision was of a special space which will be enjoyed by residents to aid their recovery, and this IDP certainly delivered.”

Jenny Mack, of IDP, the team behind the design of St Clair Gardens, said: ‘We are incredibly proud that our scheme received Highly Commended.

“We set out to create a truly holistic design that offered a beautiful calming and homely setting to support those with mental health challenges and needing higher levels of care. It means so much that together we achieved this goal.’
