Our family has been affected by mental health issues. My husband suffered with depression and died as a result of this illness. My son has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
I ran a Pimm’s Stall as part of Balsall Common Festival. A close friend helps run the festival and suggested the idea. A good friend also helped. The lady who runs the festival was also involved, and we got volunteers to help on the day. Pimms is easy enough to make – Pimms, lemonade, ice and ready-prepared fruit. We borrowed an event shelter that we decorated with lights and bunting. Coventry & Warwickshire Mind sent us plenty of publicity material as we wanted to raise awareness as well as money. We have done the event for 2 years, making around £700 each year. We also have some great conversations with people affected by mental health issues, which is why it is important to have some publicity material to signpost people to further help and support.
My advice on fundraising is keep it simple, get friends to help, have leaflets available to signpost people for further support – be prepared to talk about your own experience and listen to others. Just Do it!
